John Shjarback is an associate professor in the Department of Law and Justice Studies at Rowan University. Prior to coming to Rowan, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) for 3 years.

He earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Crime, Law and Justice from Penn State University (2010), his Master's of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Monmouth University (2012), and his Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Arizona State University (2016).

His work has been published in various peer-reviewed outlets, such as Injury Prevention, Crime & Delinquency, Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminology & Public Policy, Police Quarterly, Policing: An International Journal, and Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice.  In addition, he has written op-ed pieces in The Washington Post, the New York Daily News, The Dallas Morning News, The Star-Ledger, the El Paso Times, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

John has worked collaboratively with law enforcement organizations where he has provided input and conducted various research evaluations, including bias/disparities in traffic stops, community policing, use of force, personnel/staffing assessments, and technological influence on crime.

He is a member of The American Society of Criminology, including its Division of Policing, and The American Society of Evidence-Based Policing. He is the 2021 recipient of the ASC’s Division of Policing’s “Early Career Award.”
